Sligo Youth Information Centre has been in operation since 1989.  One of a network of 30 such centres around the country, the centre provides a free, comprehensive and confidential service to young people and those who work with them.

Information on such topics as:

  • Accommodation – lists of available accommodation, housing options, landlord/tenant rights and entitlements, rent books, etc.
  • Education/Careers – 3rd level in Ireland and Britain, correspondence and distance learning, adult education, scholarship and grants, career choices, etc.
  • Employment and Training – Job advertisements, C.V. preparation, job applications, mock interviews, employments rights, training and employment schemes, job opportunities abroad, voluntary work, etc.
  • Travel – Summer jobs abroad, J1 visas to the USA, hostelling, youth and student travel, youth exchange programmes, work permits and visas,
  • Emigration – USA, Australia, Canada, etc. passports/visas
  • Health – health services, nutrition, disease prevention, alcohol and other drugs, counselling and support services
  • Youth Rights – justice issues, legal rights, citizenship, consumer rights, etc.
  • Youth Activities – youth organisations, local youth clubs, activities for youth groups, how to set up a youth group, competition/awards
  • Local Information – local transport, local youth groups, tourist information, other agencies, etc.
Sligo Youth Information Centre offer a outreach service in the form of workshops, information nights, displays, presentations, etc., to youth and school groups, community groups, men’s and women’s groups, etc.

At present some of the workshops we offer are:

  • Bullying – types of bullying, reasons for bullying, signs of bullying, what to do if bullied, peer pressure, bullying policies, etc.
  • Respect – respect ourselves, respect other people’s things, take responsibility, etc.
  • Moving to College – housing options, college life, social life, etc.
  • Life Choice Programme – six week programme providing an opportunity for young people to explore their choices in life, helping them to make responsible informed choices about their lives and about parenthood, to give young people an insight into the life changing demands and commitment to parenthood.
  • Applying for Jobs – job hunting, job advertisements, application forms, C.V.’s, letters of application, mock interviews, etc.
  • Student Council Training – training in all aspects of running a student council
  • Another Way – exploring attitudes and alternatives to binge drinking
  • Personal Development – The Personal Me – to improve our understanding of ourselves and to build confidence
  • The Fit and Healthy Me – to develop an awareness of our own health and fitness, to recognise the importance of making positive choices about our lifestyles
