The Base Cafe took part in "Plant a Tree for OCD" as part of Mental Health week last Thursday.  Simon Tierney of OCD Ireland spoke with the young people about looking after your mental health and all took part in tree planting.  Thanks to Simon for the lovely tulip tree.  This campaign to raise awareness of OCD across Ireland involves planing a tree in every country in the county.   See pictues in our Gallery.

 Clubs/Youth Cafes

Youth Clubs/Café and projects in County Leitrim, cater for over 800 young people annually. The menu of activities is ever growing and youth clubs have come a long way in recent years, reflecting a vibrant mix of local youth volunteers, youth committees and professional support from Leitrim Youth Project At the local youth club/cafe, members, volunteer leaders and Leitrim Youth Project staff plan a programme of activities that is driven by the members' interest and needs. The menu might include many different activities under the headings of sports, culture, recreation, arts, personal development, education and trips and exchanges through local, regional and national levels. Most of all, however, the local youth club/cafe is a place to be ‘yourself’ to meet with friends, hang out and grow as a person in a safe, local environment.  In rural communities in Leitrim, the club/youth café provides an opportunity for young people to have a real and meaningful role in shaping their lives. Values such as respect, co-operation, responsibility and participation are promoters

Summer Playschemes

We also support and run Summer Playschemes in local communities catering for over 400 children

Mentoring Projects

Offered to Post Primary Schools in the region enabling senior cycle students to mentor first years.

The role of the volunteer youth worker/leader has always been and still is central to the ethos of youth work in Leitrim NCYCS Project. Without volunteers many clubs/youth cafes could not operate. Volunteers commit time and energy for the benefit of young people. As a volunteer you learn and gain skills as well as share your knowledge and skills, you are challenged and make an impact and difference to young people at this vital development stage of their lives. We provide the support, training and insurance – you commit the time, 1 – 2 hours a week.

Any Groups interested in doing exchanges please contact Leitrim Youth Project of NCYCS for application forms and we will gladly help with filling them in.

Youth Volunteer Leaders Honoured

North Connaught Youth & Community Services-Leitrim Project  celebrated 25 years of volunteer led youth provision in Dec 2014 with a volunteer awards night to acknowledge the many years of club/café youth work provided by volunteers throughout Leitrim and West Cavan. Some volunteers have being volunteering in their local club for 17 years.

The Leitrim Project was established in 1989 to combat social isolation and rural disadvantage experienced by young people in Leitrim and has grown steadily from strength to strength.  Now funded by the Department of Children and Youth Affairs , the project provides community based youth work in partnership with young people and volunteer leaders and parents.  In the 1990’s, the project worked in South Leitrim only and in the early 2000’s extended into North Leitrim and in the late 2000’s this was extended further to include West Cavan.

Today, there are 15 clubs/cafes and 9 summer projects that cater for over 1,000 young people and over 70 volunteers are involved weekly. These volunteer youth leaders provide over 35 hours of youth work weekly. In recent years a feature of youth clubs and cafes has being the growth in young people aged 15+ training as Junior Leaders and working alongside adult leaders in their clubs/cafes.  Many of these young leaders have being instrumental in setting up youth cafes in rural parishes and they are positive role models for younger club members. Since 2010, 49 young people have trained as Junior leaders with 23 presently active.  The adult and junior leaders are supported in their role by Leitrim Project Workers and receive ongoing training and help with all aspects of running a club/café and summer project to ensure a quality needs based service for all young people in Leitrim and West Cavan.

On the awards night, 44 volunteers received pins marking their years of volunteering. Those with over 10 years received gold pins while those with 5 to 10 years got silver and those with over 2 years got bronze pins.

The junior leaders present on the night were highly commended and acknowledged for their commitment to their local clubs/cafes.

25 years on , North Connaught Youth Services – Leitrim Project volunteer led youth provision is still providing an essential contribution to the development of future young citizens and community leaders in Leitrim and West Cavan  and  we would like to congratulate all recipients and thank them for their ongoing commitment and look forward to working with them for many more years.  See some of the pictures in our Gallery!
